Been-Chian Chien received the B.S. degree of Computer Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in 1987,  the M.S. degree and the Ph.D. degree of Computer Science and Information Engineering in 1989 and 1992 from National Chiao Tung University, Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, respectively.

He became an associate professor of the Department of International Trade at Nan-Tai Institute of Technology from August 1994 to July 1996 and an associate professor of the Department of Information Engineering, I-Shou University, Kaohsiung from August 1996 to July 2004. He had been invited to be a visiting scholar of the BISC (Berkeley Initiative on Soft Computing) at  U. C. Berkeley, C.A. in 1999 and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA in 2008. In 2004, he was invited to launch and organize the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National University of Tainan, Tainan, Taiwan and to be the first department head from August 2004 to July 2007 of the department. Since August 2007, he is a  professor of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National University of Tainan, Tainan, Taiwan.

Dr. Chien's major research interest includes computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, database systems and the design and analysis of algorithms. His current research activities involve machine learning, knowledge discovery and data mining, context-aware systems and context data management, intelligent content-based information retrieval.
